The Story Behind StableFriend

Hi, I’m Essi Antila — the founder of StableFriend, and the voice behind the audios in the app. Every recording you hear is rooted in my own journey with horses. Each one carries the empathy, presence, and growth I’ve gained along the way.

So, why did I create StableFriend?

Back in 2015, I was living my dream as a dressage rider. After years of dedication — moving from riding schools to owning my own stable, training with professionals, and pursuing my studies — things were finally coming together. I was all in.

Then everything changed.

It’s still hard to put into words. One by one, my beloved horses fell ill — even the young ones I never got the chance to truly begin a life with. Despite working with top veterinarians, dedicating myself fully to their care, and creating a home built around their wellbeing, I still lost several of them.

It was heartbreaking. Traumatizing.

But that period of my life pushed me to grow and brought me closer to who I truly am.

My horses’ wellbeing became my top priority. All I wanted was to see them happy and healthy. Training had to support them — not any external goals.

And I realized something else: I needed support, too. To show up better for myself, for others, and to create a more sustainable equestrian life. I needed tools to stay grounded and emotionally steady — no matter what life brought.

Alongside all the learning, guidance, and healthy habits, I began writing letters to myself. I imagined what a best friend might say or ask me. These letters became a powerful form of growth and healing.

I've always had a strong desire to help others in the equestrian world—I just didn’t know how at the time.

Then I had an idea: what if I turned those letters into audio recordings and built a welfare app around them?

So I did.

I shared the audios with friends. Their heartfelt responses moved me deeply — and gave me the courage to bring StableFriend to life.

And my life with horses now?

Thanks to the journey of creating StableFriend, I can honestly say I’m living a more balanced and joyful equestrian life than ever before. And that’s what I wish for you, too.
